GLASGOW MOUNT VERNON GREYHOUND STADIUM

This site is not an official website for the track shown here and is neither approved or endorsed by the stadium. I am indebted to Richard English for helping to construct this page.

The Scottish second city of Glasgow had a large number of greyhound tracks in the past with one of the longest lasting being at Mount Vernon which was situated at 4° 7' W 55° 50' N. The track was built on the site of a former colliery, the Daldowie Colliery and first opened for business on 10th October 1927. This made it one of the earliest in the country to become operational. The track had a circumference of almost 400 yards and ran sprints over 260 yards, standard races over 450 yards, distance races over 620 yards and extended races over 815 yards. It was a very well supported track, often commanding crowds in their thousands, with the principal races being the Mount Vernon Derby and the Mount Vernon St Leger.

The track closed in 1990, although the ground on which the former track once stood remains undeveloped.

This section gives a comprehensive picture of the badges produced by the track throughout the ages, but only provides the briefest of glimpses of its history. For those wishing to undertake further research we can recommend a visit to
